Online Counseling Assists in Resolving Decision-Making Challenges
As a mental health therapist, I understand that making choices in life can be overwhelming and confusing, especially when it comes to committing to important decisions such as a romantic interest, job, friend, trip, or task. It can be challenging to know how to make the right choice and what choosing "right" even means. This feeling of confusion can lead to indecision, which in turn can lead to stagnation and lack of progress.
Heuristics are mental shortcuts or rules of thumb that we use when making decisions. While they can help us reach conclusions quickly, they can also lead to errors, such as the Representativeness Heuristic and the Availability Heuristic. Overconfidence can also impact decision-making, causing people to overestimate their knowledge, skill, or judgment, which can lead to poor decisions. Hindsight Bias is another problem that occurs when people look back at an event and believe that they should have known the outcome. This can cause future decisions to be based on unrelated experiences. Illusory Correlation is when people see relationships between events that do not actually exist, which can lead to faulty beliefs and poor decisions.
One way to approach decision-making is to focus on the present and how a choice will affect you now, rather than focusing on the hypothetical future. Avoid bringing the past into your current experience and approach each decision with fresh eyes. Taking a step back and giving yourself time away from the decision-making process can help you see things with more clarity.
It's also essential to trust in something bigger than yourself and let go of the perspective that you have to do 100% of the action toward making something happen. Recognize that very few things in life are permanent and that many choices can be revised down the road and changed.
Practicing decision-making with small choices can help you gain confidence and trust in yourself, leading you in a positive direction. Your awareness of who and what is around you can help you with decision-making. Remember, one positive choice followed by another will lead you on a positive path, and you have the control to make the best decision you know how to make at the given time. Trust in yourself, and you got this.
